Dr. Maarten Potgieter
MBChB, MMed (Orthop), FC Orth (SA)
ABOUT
Dr. Potgieter qualified as an Orthopaedic surgeon in 2018. During his training, first at 2 Millitary Hospital in Wynberg and later at Tygerberg Hospital, he was introduced to spinal surgery and spent in excess of 12 months working in a spinal unit managing acute spinal injuries, spinal infections and degenerative conditions of the spine. After obtaining his MMed (Orth) degree, cum laude, from Stellenbosch University as well as the FCOrth (SA) qualification from the College of Orthopaedic Surgeons South Africa, Dr. Potgieter dedicated his career to spinal surgery by joining an internationally acclaimed, long-term IGASS Spine fellowship under the directorship of Dr. Davis.
Subsequently Dr. Potgieter became the head of the Orthopaedic Spinal Service at Livingstone Academic Hospital, re-establishing the once well functioning spinal unit. Here, he gained vast experience in the management of spinal tuberculosis, an infection endemic to the Eastern Cape, both in the adult and paediatric population. As the sole fellowship trained spinal surgeon in state practice in the Eastern Cape, Dr. Potgieter treated the majority of spinal fractures in the region, including: surgical stabilization, acute rehabilitation and long term care of spinal cord injured patients. He also treated congenital and adolescent scoliosis, adult lumbar and cervical degenerative conditions and malignancies involving the spinal collumn.
At present he still functions as a consultant surgeon for complex spinal cases at Livingstone Hospital and provides academic research support to the Walter Sisulu University faculty of medicine. Dr. Potgieter is also actively involved in research at the Institute of Orthopaedics and Rheumatology through the University of Stellenbosch.
As an exclusive spinal surgeon Dr. Potgieter has recently joined the Cape Spine Surgery group to initiate the Acute spinal cord affliction unit in conjunction with Mediclinic, the first of its kind in the Western Cape private health care, based right here in the Winelands. The objective of this unit is to provide an unobstructed, rapid and holistic care plan for all patients with acute spinal cord pathology. In addition to treating acute spinal cord afflictions, Dr. Potgieter treats all other chronic and acquired spinal conditions.
His patient’s are encourage to participate in the decision making of their treatment whilst being offered the most up to date available information on their condition.
