Dr. Shehnaaz Akhalwaya
ABOUT
She obtained her MBChB at University of Cape Town (UCT). This was followed by two years of internship at Tygerberg Hospital. She did her community service at Khayelitsha district hospital and Mowbray maternity in Neonatology. These varied experiences nurtured a love for caring for children and fostered her passion for child health care.
Dr. Shehnaaz went onto train in paediatrics at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital winning the Robert McDonald award for highest achiever. She obtained an MMed from UCT as well as a post graduate diploma in Paediatric Nephrology. She sub-specialised in Paediatric Rheumatology at the Red Cross Children’s Hospital, Cape Town.
Dr. Shehnaaz has also spent over 7 years in a world-class neonatal ICU in Cape Town caring for extreme premature babies, and babies with complex medical disorders. The neonatal experience further solidified her love for Paediatrics especially how paediatric medicine brings together cutting-edge science with holistic family orientated medicine.
Paediatric Rheumatology is a niche specialisation which allows Dr. Shehnaaz to manage children from all age groups, providing up to date evidence-based medicine and is field filled with so much hope. She loves getting to know the patients as well as their families, their social lives, understanding their struggles and walking the journey towards well-being. She works in both the private and public sector (Red Cross Children’s Hospital) as a consultant Paediatric Rheumatologist.
She is a mum to 3 children, and in her spare time loves the outdoors, reading and spending time with her family.
Dr. Shehnaaz sees patients in Stellenbosch, Cape Town as well as does outreach to Port Elizabeth. She feels truly blessed to be able to practise in this field and does not take the responsibility of each child’s care lightly.
