Dr. Theresa Mann
HEAD OF RESEARCH
Dr. Mann completed a PhD in Exercise Science at the University of Cape Town before transitioning into the field of orthopaedic research. Her experience includes four years as a postdoctoral researcher in the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stellenbosch University, where she conducted research on spinal tuberculosis, among other projects.
In 2019, Dr. Mann joined IOR as the full-time research consultant, providing coordination and support for all IOR research activities. She remains affiliated with the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery at Stellenbosch University as a research fellow.

Dr. Maaike Eken
RESEARCH LEAD
Dr. Eken obtained her PhD in Rehabilitation Medicine at the VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in which she focused on strength, endurance and movement analysis of children and adolescents with Cerebral Palsy.
She continued her academic career as a postdoctoral research fellow at Stellenbosch University, first at the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and afterwards at the Institute of Sport and Exercise Medicine (ISEM).
Dr. Eken joined IOR in 2024 and is involved in studies related to limb reconstruction and evaluation of surgical training, among others. She remains an active researcher at ISEM, where her research involves injury, illness and mental health surveillance in athletes with and without a disability.
